DANIËL-VAN-HEIL_.jpg

Daniël van Heil

Winter landscape with skaters and one colf player and figures on a path in a wood, a town (probably Antwerp) beyond. Daniël van Heil (Brussels, 1604 – 1664/1684, Brussels)

Oil on canvas. 60 x 83.2 cm / 23⅝ x 32¾ in. Signed centre right: DVH

Condition Report
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is slightly discoloured. Retouching is visible along all four margins, and some minor flaking within this has resulted in some small scattered losses in the lower margin just right of centre, and in the lower right corner. Discoloured retouchings are scattered through the sky. There is an area of retouching through the branches in the upper centre of the tree, measuring approx. 4 x 8 cm. and some of the paint surface here is lifting slightly. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all these and reveals further scattered and cosmetic retouching in the sky mostly comprised of fine lines to the network of craquelure. There are only minor retouchings in the foreground, and a more notable patch to the left of the central tree, 3 x 2 cm. The painting is in overall fairly good condition.
